Hip Replacements

A hip replacement is a surgical procedure where a damaged or diseased hip joint is replaced with a prosthetic implant.

Here is a list of possible complications that arise out of someone undergoing hip replacement surgery:

Incorrect prosthesis used:

  • There are different types of artificial hip joints available in hip replacement surgery. Different models are suitable for different size individuals and different materials are available such as titanium, ceramic and steel joints.
  • It does happen that some orthopaedic surgeons may be the agents for a particular brand of prosthesis, receive a percentage of the cost of the prosthesis and therefore tend to utilise such prosthesis in all situations.
Poor infection control:
  • One of the major dangers of hip replacement surgery is infection, given the very large cut which is made, as also emboli.  Emboli are clots in veins and the lungs cause by molecules of fat being released into the blood stream when the leg and hip bones are opened to receive the artificial hip joint.
  • Foreign objects left in the body e.g. swabs, surgical blades etc
  • Wrong limb amputated
